Solo Oracle

Play without a GM: ask the oracle yes-or-no questions, roll random events and story prompts, and keep a journal of your adventure as you go.

How to play solo

  1. Set a scene. Decide where your character is and what they want right now.
  2. Ask questions. Whenever you don’t know something — “Is the gate guarded?” — pick how likely it is and ask. “Yes, but…” and “No, and…” answers add complications; let them surprise you.
  3. Use the prompts. For open questions (“What does the stranger want?”), roll an action and a theme and read them together.
  4. Watch for random events. About one question in ten, something else happens too. Roll it, interpret it, and keep going.
  5. Keep threads and characters. Track loose ends and the people you meet, and roll one when you need inspiration.
  6. Journal it. Every answer is saved in your journal on this device. Copy it out to keep a record of the campaign.

The oracle works with any game and any rules: use the dice roller for checks, the dungeon builder for places to explore and the random tables for details. Want a full solo kit? See the solo books in our Homebrew Picks.
